If you make handmade goods, vintage items, or digital products, you'll eventually face this choice: sell on Etsy, build a Shopify store, or do both. The fee structures are very different, and the right answer depends on your sales volume and how much you value built-in traffic versus brand control.
Etsy charges sellers across three fee types:
| Fee Type | Amount | When Charged |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 per item | When you publish or renew a listing |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% of sale price + shipping | When an item sells |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25 (US) | When payment is processed |
| Offsite Ads fee | 12–15% (only if sale came from an Etsy ad) | Optional; 12% if >$10K/yr revenue |
Example — $50 sale on Etsy (buyer pays $8 shipping):
Note: Etsy's transaction fee applies to the total amount collected from the buyer, including shipping. If you charge $8 for shipping but it only costs $5, Etsy still takes 6.5% of the $8.
Shopify's fee structure is different: you pay a flat monthly fee regardless of sales volume, then per-transaction processing costs.
| Plan | Monthly Fee | Shopify Payments Rate | 3rd-Party Transaction Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39/mo | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2% |
| Shopify | $105/mo | 2.6% + 30¢ | 1% |
| Advanced | $399/mo | 2.4% + 30¢ | 0.5% |
Example — $50 sale on Shopify Basic (using Shopify Payments):
The catch: you also pay $39/month whether you sell 1 item or 1,000.
On a $50 sale, Etsy takes ~$5.96 and Shopify takes ~$1.75. The difference is $4.21 per sale. At that rate, Shopify's $39/month plan breaks even at:
$39 ÷ $4.21 per sale ≈ 9–10 sales per monthThat's surprisingly low — just 9–10 units per month and Shopify's per-sale cost is already offset by the plan fee. At 30–50 sales per month, Shopify is meaningfully cheaper per unit.
But this ignores a critical difference: Etsy brings buyers to you; Shopify does not.

Etsy has over 90 million active buyers searching for handmade, vintage, and unique items. When you list on Etsy, you're immediately accessible to those buyers — no marketing required to get started. For new sellers, this is the biggest advantage Etsy has. The 6.5% transaction fee is effectively a marketing fee you'd otherwise spend on ads.
Shopify is a storefront, not a marketplace. No one finds your Shopify store by searching Shopify — you have to drive traffic yourself via SEO, social media, email, or paid ads. This is the hidden cost of Shopify that fee comparisons miss: customer acquisition. A new Shopify store with no traffic is paying $39/month to sell nothing.
| Etsy | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in audience | ✅ 90M+ buyers | ❌ You build it |
| Brand control | Limited (Etsy branding dominates) | Full — your domain, your design |
| Listing fee | $0.20/item | $0 — unlimited products |
| Monthly fee | $0 (or $10/mo for Etsy Plus) | $39–$399/mo |
| Payment options | Etsy Payments only | 100+ payment providers |
| Customer data | Limited access | Full access — build email lists |
| SEO ownership | Etsy owns your SEO | You own your domain and SEO |
| Best for | Handmade, vintage, crafts | Scaling brand, repeat customers |
Most successful sellers eventually use both: Etsy for discovery (new customers find you via search) and Shopify for repeat purchases (loyal customers buy directly, skipping Etsy's fees). This is how you keep Etsy's built-in traffic while building a brand you own.
Some sellers also migrate customers from Etsy to Shopify by including package inserts with a discount code for their Shopify store. Not against Etsy's terms of service — the key is you're not directly soliciting Etsy buyers to leave the platform, you're offering them a direct purchase option on a future order.
Etsy is cheaper at low volumes (under ~50 sales/month) because there's no monthly fee. Shopify becomes cheaper at higher volumes where the flat monthly plan is offset by lower per-sale costs.
Only if you use a third-party payment processor (0.5–2% depending on plan). With Shopify Payments, there is no additional transaction fee — just the payment processing rate.
Yes, and many successful sellers do. Use Etsy for discovery, Shopify as your branded storefront for repeat buyers. You can sync inventory with third-party tools.
On a typical $50 sale with $8 shipping, Etsy takes about $5.96 total (listing fee + 6.5% transaction fee + 3% + $0.25 payment processing). That's roughly 10% of revenue collected.
