Amazon requires the longest side to be at least 1000px for zoom to activate (2000px recommended for best quality). Main images must have a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) and the product must fill at least 85% of the image frame.
Downscaling (making smaller) has no visible quality loss — you are simply removing pixels. Upscaling (making larger) beyond the original resolution will produce blurring. Always start with the highest resolution original you have.
